- Why we built it
- In the places where a VPN matters most, the big names do not work. Nord, Surfshark and the rest run on WireGuard. WireGuard is trivial to fingerprint, so behind a serious filter they are dead weight. What people use there instead is a VLESS key pasted into a third-party client. It survives, and it is miserable to live with. Nobody was offering both halves in one app: the polish people expect, and protocols that outlast a censor.
- The hard part
- You do not beat deep packet inspection once and move on. Domains get burned. Address ranges get null-routed. A protocol signature lands in a filter, in three countries in the same week. Rotating all of that is the easy half. The harder problem is that a censored network lies politely. A block page comes back as a perfectly ordinary success, so a status code tells the app nothing about whether it reached us. KryonVPN carries a signed list of ways home and judges what actually answered, not what claimed to. Usually it has already moved before anyone sees a reconnect prompt.
- A call we made
- Not logging is cheap to promise and expensive to keep. When a connection dies in a country we cannot test from, there is no session for us to open. No address, no timestamp, no protocol trace. We work from aggregate health checks and whatever the person can describe. It is slower, and sometimes it goes nowhere. We keep it because any log we hold is a log somebody can demand.
- What it taught us
- We built it for the hard places and expected to stay there. Most people on KryonVPN today are nowhere near a censor. They arrived for the interface and stayed because the app never asks them anything. Solving the worst case turned out to be the shortest route to a better everyday product.
