- The hard part
- Forwarding a message is not the same as relaying it. Pass the original along untouched and every check the receiving server runs will fail: the mail arrives claiming to come from a sender we are not, over infrastructure that sender never authorised. It lands in spam, or nowhere. So Hido does not really forward your mail. It re-originates it from the alias, signs it with a domain we control, and keeps the real sender in the reply address. It arrives authenticated. The cost is that hitting reply answers from your own address instead of the alias, which is why there is a compose window at all.

- Most alias services forward and forget. We built the inbox as well, so a leaking address can be opened and read without a single message touching your real one, and so that when an alias starts collecting mail you never asked for you can see precisely who is answerable for it. The mail sits with us until you clear it, and clearing it is one tap. That is a real trade and we would make it again: an alias you cannot read is an alias you cannot audit.
- What it taught us
- Marketing drifts away from a product faster than anyone expects, because the page gets written once and the code changes every week. So we read our own copy line by line with the source open beside it and keep only what the code can demonstrate. It says less than it could. Every line of it is something the product actually does, and that pass now happens before a page ships rather than after somebody notices.
