- A general model is not a tutor, and every gap between the two had to be closed by hand. Left alone it picks its own name, so the character changes between sessions. It leaks its own bookkeeping into the sentence it reads aloud. It drifts above the level the learner has reached, a little further every turn. The worst one took longest to see. The transcriber is helpful: it quietly repairs what the learner actually said, so the mistake we exist to catch arrives as clean English before the tutor ever sees it. Rumi now asks it to transcribe verbatim, calques and all, and checks every correction against the words the learner really used.
- A call we made
- We tested a model around eighty times cheaper per turn and reverted it the next day. On paper it matched. In an actual conversation it did not, and that gap is the entire product. Rumi also speaks with the slower, warmer voice instead of the fast one, which costs a few hundred milliseconds on every reply. On a product built around listening, that is where the milliseconds should go.
- What it taught us
- People open a lesson to look around before they commit to it. That sounds obvious written down and it is invisible in a spreadsheet: an allowance spent the moment a lesson opens charges someone for a glance. Rumi spends it on the first thing the learner actually says, and a turn that fails on our side gives it straight back. A week of watching what people do with a free tier settles more than a quarter of arguing about it.
